Excluding tobacco, over 20 million individuals over the age of 12 in the United States suffer from an addiction. Whether it’s adderall addiction or alcohol addiction, the consequences can be deadly if addiction treatment is not sought out.
If someone you know is exhibiting signs of addiction, but you’re not sure, here is a short guide detailing three common signs that can mean addiction or drug abuse.
Isolation
Addicts often claim drug or alcohol use as a way to deal with stress or just “relax after a hard day,” and will either emotionally withdraw but still partake in their substance abuse in the presence of family and friends, or seek solitude by escaping to a quiet spot in the home to drink or use alone. Other signs of addiction are when addicts attempt to hide their use completely, and make lengthy trips outside of the home. Often addicts can’t see the outward signs, but to family members, friends, and other loved ones, they are incredibly apparent.
Mood Swings
small mood swings are normal in human beings, but with millions of people having a dependence on both alcohol and illicit drugs, they can be more severe, and even dangerous. If drug or alcohol use has gotten to the point where someone completely dependent, the symptoms of withdrawal can set in after a very short time. Some symptoms include depression, irritability, fatigue, sweating, and anxiety. When a person is using, drastic improvements in mood can occur, and are a sure sign of addiction.
Financial Difficulty
In an unfortunate amount of cases, addicts have confirmed that illegal drugs are often readily available and even less expensive than a six-pack of beer. However, that doesn’t mean that cocaine addiction costs any less money in the long run. In cases of severe addiction, a friend or family member may not have money for staples like groceries, clothing, or bills, but will often find a way to continue drug or alcohol use. For a partner or a roommate, the change may take months to notice, but once they do, addiction treatment should be sought immediately.
Addiction is a serious problem that plagues millions of people every day. While it’s up to the individual to seek drug treatment, it’s up to their loved ones to notice the signs and take action to help them.
