Okay, so you’re in the real estate search looking for some great real estate for sale — maybe a luxury home, a quaint rural property, or even a log cabin. With over 2,800 active real estate listings in Iowa as of April 2014, you’re bound to find something eventually, especially if you are using a real estate agent.

Real estate agents should provide you with evaluative information about what options are out there as well as help you negotiate a deal when you’ve finally decided to say “I do” to your dream home. But none of this will happen if you’ve ended up choosing the wrong agent.

Here are eight signs that its time to ditch your real estate agent and find another real estate company:

1. Unresponsive. Do understand that your agent is not supposed to be on call 24/7, but if they haven’t returned your calls and haven’t responded to any emails in over 48 hours without an excuse, this can get tiring. Time to find someone else.
2. Not Listening. There’s no worse feeling than not being heard. If you’re meeting with your real estate agent for the first time, take not of how in tune they are with your wants and needs. If not, move on.
3. Inexperience. First things first, ask your agent how long they’ve been in the business. An inexperienced agent will most likely not know the housing market very well, such as knowing that the average home price in Iowa in April 2014 was $151,833.
4. Unprofessional. If you have any inkling that your agent is unprofessional (too buddy buddy? too rude?), disorganized, or canceling and/or showing up late for appointments, it is time to find another. There are plenty of other real estate companies out there.
5. Uneasiness. If your agent is trying to convince you to see this “great new place” that doesn’t seem like your fit, this could leave you feeling uncomfortable and trapped. A good agent should be able to determine your likes and dislikes after only a few viewings.
6. Bad Impression. Its all about the first impressions these days — especially as the housing market is still very competitive. You are going to want an agent who represents you and your needs well.
7. Untrustworthy. If your current agent keeps switching between broker fees, or is disclosing some of your personal issues, this is a major red flag and should be taken very seriously. Also, be wary of poorly written contacts.

If you suspect anything fishy going on with your real estate agent, first consult your real estate company to see if you can clear anything up. If not, don’t be afraid to move on to someone who can better serve you. More like this.
