Things to Consider When Constructing a New Home

November 26, 2018

The new construction of a family home is a big undertaking. Both financially and commitment wise it is not something to be taken lightly. It should be planned out with care and expertise so that you and your family can have the home of your dreams in an area that suits your needs.

New homes are exciting and custom homes are even more thrilling, but it’s not something you want to rush through. There are many ins and out of planning a house. Here are some things you might want to consider while planning out your family’s new home construction.

Location

The location of a home is just as if not more important than the functionality of the house itself. You’re going to want a safe and friendly neighborhood where your kids can play and where you don’t have to worry about things like drugs or vandalism.

It’s also important to consider what’s nearby. How close will your new home be to the right schools? How close is it to your favorite grocery store or local entertainment? Do you like the view? These are all good questions to ask when deciding where to build. There are plenty of great homes for sale out there, but the beauty of building your own is getting to choose where it goes.

Number of Rooms

While the number of bedrooms and bathrooms is important to consider and will surely be one of the first things that comes to mind, there are other rooms to think about as well. Will you need extra space for things like offices, game rooms, arts and crafts spaces, music rooms, etc?

Take some time to write out a list of any extra spaces your home will require or just areas that you want to have. Some modern homes have the equivalent of an apartment in their basement for when family comes to stay. If you have a large family and plan on hosting for holidays, this might be a wise decision.

Accommodations for Pets

Does your family have pets? Are they a big part of your family? If so you might want to consider building in some fun accommodations for them. If your dog needs to be put up when you’re not home maybe build in a small play room for him. You could even have climbing spaces for your cats added on. If you bathe your own pets consider having a pet bath put in that allows you to easily move them in and out and tether them.

Convenient Lighting and Electrical Outlets

A great opportunity with new construction is the chance to plan out an electrical and lighting system this isn’t a hassle. New construction means you can add light switches and outlets in places that make the most sense and that will work with the functionality of your home and family. Take some time to discuss this in further depth with your electrician and builders and see what kind of ideas you can come up with together.

Storage Space

One of the most frustrating things in a home can be not having enough storage space or the lack of storage space that is out of the way. While working through the new construction of your home, think about where you want the storage areas to be and you can make them both functional and nice to look at. Build in some extra shelving or closets in spaces that are conveniently located.

Take It Slow

The most important thing is to just take your time and really think things through. Do your research, make lots of lists, and talk to the professionals. With the right planning and effort, you could have a home that works perfectly for you.
