Many older adults reside in assisted living apartments within senior living communities. While 74% of the residents are women, 26% are men. Over 75% of these individuals have at least two of the most common chronic conditions. In addition to high blood pressure, a large percentage of people living in these types of communities have Alzheimer’s disease or different types of dementia. While men are diagnosed with various types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, approximately 66% of the United States’ current Alzheimer’s patients are women.

Since most adults want to be as independent as possible, assisted living facilities can help them with doing and being so. There are more women than men that live in assisted living retirement homes, however.
In addition to providing memory care and supervision for Alzheimer’s patients, these facilities also offer a variety of other benefits. Approximately four out of ten residents tend to receive assistance with three or more daily living activities. Bathing and dressing were the most common types of assistance that residents required.

In general, assisted living facilities will provide, coordinate and/or make arrangements for these and other important services:

  • 24-hour supervision
  • Three meals a day plus snacks in a group dining room
  • Personal care
  • Health care
  • Medication management
  • Social services
  • Transportation
  • Laundry service
  • Housekeeping
  • Maintenance
  • The ProMature Group, LLC’s 2009 Independent Living Report showed that there were a variety of other benefits to residing in an independent living retirement community. The residents responded that they made new friends and explored new activities and hobbies. In addition to these benefits, many residents also stated that they had a more positive experience than they had previously believed they would. A large part of this is due to engaging with other residents and otherwise being part of a community.

If you’re looking for long term care for Alzheimers patients, it’s important to note that there are a variety of available options. Since there are several stages to this disease, you may initially be interested in an assisted living senior retirement home rather than long term care for Alzheimers patients. When you choose the best situation for your loved one, they will be able to engage in a variety of activities that are specifically designed for Alzheimer’s residents, which includes memory care.
